Any money given goes first and foremost to cover the monthly fees. The extra amount of money received then goes to various additions such as:

Add or improve hardware to ensure smooth gameplay
Advertise to recruit new players
Afford extra features like the email newsletter
Even add new gameplay types as demanded

You can set any amount of your choice to contribute every month, or you can prepay for a full year.
