Misc 1.7 tidbits

Posted by Doctacosa on December 31, 2013 at 20:00 [Link]

Last day of the year, and one last update to wrap things up! Here are a few things to note since our move to Minecraft 1.7.

Resource pack updates
A new resource pack update has been published today for the Standard and Notato editions. This fixes the lack of in-game music and features four new tracks for the game's title screen. Downloads are provided on the resource pack page. Those who accepted the server's recommendation should be prompted to update at their next login.

Overworld surface map deleted
A lot of exploration has been done since the move to 1.7 a few days ago, and the map's size has grown accordingly. In order to free up some much needed disk space, I've removed the surface (3D) version of the overworld map, which is the largest by far. It will possibly return once a future map trim is performed.

Mesa biomes
I'm aware that, despite the best efforts of many fearless explorers, no mesa biomes have been sighted yet. As such, I've begun planning an alternative if none are discovered shortly. In any case, don't worry: we WILL have a mesa to behold and plunder soon enough!

If you haven't read my previous update about 1.7, please do so now. It contains several important notes about the update and some of the changes performed on the server.

Server updated to 1.7!

Posted by Doctacosa on December 28, 2013 at 1:41 [Link]

This is the time you've been waiting for: the server has been updated to Minecraft 1.7! You can now select 1.7.4 in your client and join us for some fun! There are a few important things to note, so please read on for more details.

The server's main map is there as before, obviously. At a general request, I've changed the generation mode for new chunks to large biomes. This means that all newly generated areas will feature larger biomes than before, creating a somewhat more realistic landscape and allowing people to create massive builds that don't spill over different environments. Of course, this means that you might need to travel further out to encounter new areas.

If you're not in a rush to discover the new biomes, I suggest you wait some more still. We're planning rails leading people from the core areas into the new chunks!

A border has been added to the world, visible as a red circle on the map. It's large, with a LOT of room for growth, and exists merely to simplify future server administration tasks. This barrier can't be crossed, as you'll bounce if you attempt to do so. All previously explored areas are within this new limit.

As I've alluded to in the past, two new parallel worlds will be introduced! One will be an amplified map, featuring crazy landscapes and an higher difficulty level for an added challenge. The other is a returning surprise, at the request of a few players. I'm still performing preparation work on that front, and will open them in a week or two. More to come!

New as of 1.7 are server resource pack recommendations. When you login to the server for the first time, it will offer you to download and use our own pack. The regular edition will be used for this, while alternatives will still be available from the resource pack page.

Please note that the map is regenerating and will be fully available within the next few hours.

Enjoy! :-D

UPDATE: The sounds from the various resource packs don't work as of MC 1.7. Fortunately, we have Sphenicus to the rescue with new versions! Please redownload at your convenience!

Server upgrades, 1.7 status

Posted by Doctacosa on December 21, 2013 at 20:32 [Link]

Thanks to a string of generous donations lately, I'm happy to announce that the server's memory capacity has been increased by 33% and the disk space by 60%! The memory increase will allow smoother gameplay when more players are online at once along with a higher players cap, while the storage increase will allow us to continue to grow and even add parallel worlds to play on. More information on that last point will be available once the update to 1.7 is done.

For more information on donations as well as other ways to help the server, please see the Help page!

Plans for the 1.7 update
I've been running tests in the past several days with Minecraft 1.7 and have been making good progress. As such, unless I face major troubles, I'm planning to update the server on the 26th or 27th of December. This will involve a downtime of several hours while I take care of everything. Thank you for your understanding!

Resource pack - Christmas edition

Posted by Doctacosa on December 4, 2013 at 3:58 [Link]

Looking for more holiday cheer? Sphenicus has that covered, with a special Christmas edition of the Creeper's Lab resource pack! This version features various Christmas songs, edited paintings, and more!

Put on your Santa hat, get in the holiday spirit and download it from its own page!

UPDATE on Dec. 8: The Christmas pack is now available in a Notato edition as well!

December! Free Christmas cards! Lag update!

Posted by Doctacosa on December 1, 2013 at 21:35 [Link]

It's December, month of the Christmas holidays in a large part of the world, and it's time to celebrate!

I've decided to send Christmas cards to anyone who wants one! Locate the giant holiday mailbox in Central (next to the Community Center), submit your address and you'll get a card in the mail! Full instructions are provided next to it.

Lag update - it's about gone!
I'm happy to report that the lag issues that have been plagging the server are pretty much gone! This took a while to track down, and I'd like to thank everyone who helped me test this through numerous server restarts. There will still be slowdowns occasionally, especially when multiple players are online, but the worst of it is behind us! For those interested, I've made a forum topic with more technical information.

Server migration complete - new IP!

Posted by Doctacosa on November 27, 2013 at 7:47 [Link]

The server's migration is now complete. This update doesn't change the hardware category we were running on, but was required by my host to move to a more advanced control panel.

The server's IP address has changed! It is now:
192.210.229.66:25565

Those who keep direct links to the map will have to update them, as it is now located over at 192.210.229.66:8123. The map is currently regenerating and will be fully available later in the day.

The previous IP address will keep working for now to display to connecting players a message inviting them to move to the new address. It will be taken down in a few weeks; as such, please don't wait too long before making the jump!

Please note that the chatroom connection is broken until further notice. I will update this post once it's back in working order.

UPDATE: The chatroom is back in working order!

Resource pack - Notato edition

Posted by Doctacosa on November 20, 2013 at 3:25 [Link]

Sphenicus has released today a variant of the Creeper's Lab resource pack. This new edition, dubbed Notato, features a lighter and quieter rain than the standard version. The current, primary download remains unchanged.

If you're interested in this feature, get the Notato edition from the same download page!

We are on Instagram!

Posted by Doctacosa on November 18, 2013 at 3:33 [Link]

Thanks to AshaLina's effort, the Creeper's Lab is now present on Instagram! Be sure to send her screenshots of the server and yours builds to be posted there, and follow the account to be posted on future updates!

Tumblr reminder
As a reminder, we're also on Tumblr among others. Tag the appropriate posts with "#creeper's lab", and I'll happily reblog them for all to see!

Second anniversary!

Posted by Doctacosa on November 11, 2013 at 17:54 [Link]

The server is two years old as of today! I'd like to take this time to thank all the past and current players for making the Creeper's Lab the popular place it is today!

In the past year, we've had one giveaway, two successful contests, the introduction of Events Nights and its many attractions, and more! Several surprises are also in store for the coming months, so keep an eye on this spot for future announcements.

Window to the past
As we're going through a major reorganization of Central and its surrounding areas, remember that the place used to be more much empty and surrounded by wild nature!

Central town - November 2011

Once again, thank you for playing with us, and here's again to many more years of minecrafting!

Reminder: Saturday Nights are Events Nights!

Posted by Doctacosa on November 9, 2013 at 5:02 [Link]

I'd like to remind new and old players alike that Saturday nights are Events Night! Starting at 9pm Eastern time and lasting several hours, this special period features several attractions that can be enjoyed by yourself or as part of a group! To make things easier, there are a number of teleporters enabled all around the map for quick travel. Also, and only during those periods, no items or experience will be lost when dying. This makes it much easier to organize PvP matches!

The activities available include PvP arenas, parkour, mazes, racetracks, roller coasters, chess and more! For a full list, please see the list of attractions. The page has been updated with the latest additions, including Avoid the Rainbow and the SpiderDome. Please note that the former, by Septina, has been moved to Victoria. Windgrabah now also features a teleportation point.

Unforgiveable Labyrinth

Recently added by iKatze is the Unforgiveable Labyrinth. Found southwest of Central and reachable through it's own teleport, this event is a challenging maze where you aim to find your way to the end while finding hidden bones. Prizes are awarded to those who make it through. Perfect for those still in the Halloween mood, or wanting to try something different!

Rules update

Posted by Doctacosa on October 31, 2013 at 1:58 [Link]

In order to clarify the current set of rules and cover more situations, I've rewritten the set of rules. Please give them a quick read over to make sure you're familiar with them.

Most notable is the addition of rule #7, which I believe is needed after a few incidents. It goes as such:
No lagging devices: no devices that create a noticeable amount of lag or stress on the server are allowed. This includes but is not limited to heavy redstone mechanisms and large amounts of animals.

Thank you for being considerate toward your fellow players!

Server upgraded to 1.6.4, info about 1.7

Posted by Doctacosa on October 25, 2013 at 2:08 [Link]

The server has been updated tonight to Minecraft 1.6.4! This means it's also time to change your settings to keep on playing with us.

In the launcher, click the "Edit profile" buttton and select "release 1.6.4" as the "Use version" setting. You will then be able to join as before.

Minecraft 1.7 is scheduled to be released tomorrow. However, as usual, it will take some time before a stable server version is available. That's why it's important that you select "release 1.6.4" in your launcher instead of "Use Latest Version", as you wouldn't be able to connect otherwise!

Muncie Contest Winners Announced!

Posted by WindRider739 on October 23, 2013 at 3:03 [Link]

The Muncie building contest is over, folks! As many of you are aware, Muncie was locked down for judging. First thing's first - now that judging is over, the area is unlocked and you are free to build again! Judges in this competition were DrCossack, Anonymous_SoFar and myself (WindRider739). Lots were judged based on originality, detail, asthetics, adherence to the rules, criteria and other minor aspects. Here is a list of the winners and their prizes!

Septina - 1st place: $20.00 Amazon Gift Card!
50teddybears - 2nd place: Wind's goody bag!
mormonmoo - 3rd place: Choice of hyper enchanted weapons or armor courtesy of Wind's personal stash!

* Winners! Watch your inboxes on the forum for more information regarding your prizes!
* All entries with their scores and comments can be viewed here
* Now that the contest is over, Muncie is available for free building and expansion.

I'd like to thank everyone who participated in this competition with the sole exception of Sora, who can really just go away. We're glad so many people turned out for this contest, and that the quality of so many of your creations was so high. Your interest and devotion to your projects ensures that there will be more contests in the future.

Contest is over!

Posted by Doctacosa on October 19, 2013 at 4:23 [Link]

The Nether city building contest in Muncue is now closed!

The entire city is locked against modifications until our judges have had time to review each entry. This will take a few days. Once that's completed, the city's business will resume and you will be free to work on your lots as you wish!

Resource pack update

Posted by Doctacosa on October 16, 2013 at 1:25 [Link]

Our official resource pack has been updated today! From the words of Sphenicus himself: "Sounds! A small selection of the default sounds have been improved upon for a more unique experience. Continue playing as usual and see what surprises are in store! More to come, don't you worry!" Download the new version from it's dedicated page!

In order to properly mark the work put into this, Sphenicus has inherited the Media status. Congrats!

Protection improvements + contest reminder

Posted by Doctacosa on October 13, 2013 at 1:29 [Link]

To prevent random thefts and make it easier for new players to adjust, chests placed from on now will all default to a private protection. This means that no one but the player creating them will be able to access them. To allow anyone to open / place / remove items, doing a /cremove command on them will be needed, possibly followed by a /cpublic.

Also new as of today is the ability to lock droppers and hoppers, much like how furnaces could already be protected. That way, people won't be able to swipe materials out of your devices!

Contest reminder
I'd also like to remind everyone that there is about a week left in our city building contest in Muncie. That's still plenty of time to get started on designing and building an entry!

Muncie Building Contest - LIVE!

Posted by WindRider739 on October 5, 2013 at 4:10 [Link]

The Muncie building contest is LIVE folks! From Central, take the Windgrabah line through the nether, and get off at the first and only stop. A clearly marked sign reading MUNCIE will show you the way to a town built on poverty! There's a special map marker in the nether that will show you where to go, here!

Players have from 00:00 EST on 10/05/2013 until 00:00 EST 10/19/2013 to build the most impressive structure they can. Lots are 25x25, and each player is awarded one lot should they choose to build. Players are encouraged to work in teams to build more impressive structures, though this is NOT a rule. The theme is City-scape so most things are valid! Skyscrapers, businesses, police stations, libraries, houses, apartment buildings... if you find it in a town, it's good!

Judging will take place after the contest ends and will take into account form, function, design, theme, originality and other factors. Work hard, because the lava might be hot, but the prizes are hotter this time around.

Prizes are as follows:

1st: $20.00 Amazon gift card
2nd: Chest of goodies from Wind's personal stash
3rd: Choice of a set of enchanted diamond armor OR enchanted diamond sword and enchanted bow.

Staff application results

Posted by Doctacosa on October 4, 2013 at 0:54 [Link]

First of all, a big thank you to everyone who applied. I believe this is the highest level of interest I've seen yet for new positions, and it's always nice to see that this many people are willing to help their fellow players and work on making the server an even better place.

Obviously, I couldn't promote everyone who submitted an application. After proper consideration, I'm happy to announce that AshaLina, HimochiKouen, inflammo and MediaKlepto have all inherited the status of Helper. Congratulations, and good luck! All four of you will soon be getting a private message on the forums with more detailed information.

Also, due to inactivity or lack of availability on their part, ADeadlyFish, daylightnightmar, Kusorai and Phrogie have returned to the standard Trusted status. Thanks for helping when you could!

Map clean-up complete!

Posted by Doctacosa on September 29, 2013 at 5:38 [Link]

The map clean-up operation is complete, and the server is back to normal. You're free to resume playing!

Remember that this was done to prepare the arrival of 1.7 and it's new biomes. As such, I'm asking you to please not venture outside of the currently explored areas. Several regions have been protected against visitors, but others have not. I rely on you to make it easier for everyone!

Also note that, at the time of writing, the map is regenerating and won't be fully usable for several hours.

Upcoming Building Contest - Oct 5 - 19

Posted by WindRider739 on September 29, 2013 at 2:14 [Link]

Alright, folks - it's that time again! I'm giving everyone a heads up to gather supplies for an upcoming contest. Here's the basics; We're going to build a nether-city named Muncie. Building will not begin until Events night October 5th. The theme is city-scape, which means offices, businesses, apartments, sky scrapers, the whole nine yards are good to go. Everyone will be provided a 25x25 lot to build inside of, which they will own from bedrock floor to bedrock cieling. Players are encouraged to work in teams. This contest WILL take place inside the nether at a location that will be announced on the 5th. Prizes are to be announced, but I can tell you that an ample sum of goodies will be donated from my (WindRider739) personal stores, and there's even rumors of a cash prize. So go ahead and start thinking about what you want to make and what supplies you'll need for it. Contest begins one week from today! Get out there!

Server maintenance in progress

Posted by Doctacosa on September 28, 2013 at 17:32 [Link]

The server will be inaccessible for several hours as I perform the map trimming operation and general maintenance. I aim to be done before Events Night starts this evening.

I'll be in the chatroom during this operation if anyone has any questions!

Help wanted!

Posted by Doctacosa on September 26, 2013 at 16:03 [Link]

With several of our current staff members busy with real life, we need extra hands to welcome new players and ensure that the community's needs are taken care of. As such, depending on the replies I get, I'd like to add 3 to 4 new Helpers and 1 YouTube reporter to the server's staff.

As a reminder, the tasks of a helper are focused mostly on helping the players by answering questions, with a much smaller focus on special commands than ops. This includes:

  • Greeting the new players and answering any questions they might have
  • Checking on those players to make sure they understand and follow the rules
  • Getting players unstuck due to server bugs (it happens!)
  • As a last resort, kicking and/or banning troublesome players

The focus of the YouTube reporter would be to produce new videos showcasing the server itself, our builds and ongoing events. These videos would then go on our channel for the world to see. Both Krodane and WindRider739 might contribute episodes once in a while, but whoever applies to this position should expect to be the primary creator. If you've already done videos before, don't hesitate to send a sample link our way!

As usual, only registered and active players will be considered. If you're interested and want to apply to a position (or both!), please send me (Dr. Cossack) a private message through the forums.

To clarify something I've been asked about, I will drop from the staff anyone who barely shows up in-game for a significant period of time, usually a few months, unless there's a specific reason for me not to. The "Helper" and "Op" are about active people who are available to assist others, after all!

Thank you for your interest!

Sneak update: Nominations will be done in approximately a week!

MC 1.6.4 released - stay with us on 1.6.2!

Posted by Doctacosa on September 19, 2013 at 17:13 [Link]

Minecraft 1.6.4 has been released today (yes, .4, not .3), and it's not compatible with the current server version of 1.6.2. As such, you need to stay at the previous version in order to continue playing with us!

In the launcher, click the "Edit profile" buttton and select "release 1.6.2" as the "Use version" setting. You will then be able to join as usual. A further news post will be made once we update.

I recommend selecting the current version number from the launcher even if we are running the latest one available. That way, whenever the client gets an automatic update, you won't have to go back and change your settings!

Map clean-up - check on your stuff!

Posted by Doctacosa on September 14, 2013 at 20:56 [Link]

I've made some allusions to this, now it's time to move forward.

We're planning a major map cleaning operation, and we need your help. Old, unused areas will be deleted in two weeks to help the server run smoothly and to prepare for future updates.

More precisely, the goals of this operation are:
- Remove unusued land
- Eliminate old, abandoned buildings
- Decrease the size of the map
- Allow new 1.7 chunks to generate closer to inhabited areas

What you need to do
Check the server map. Multiple areas are marked in red. Those are the spots that are scheduled to be deleted unless someone claims any given part. Please check through the areas where you've been active in the past and that you wish to keep to make sure they aren't in a red zone. If anything is in there and you want to keep it, please reply to this news post with the coordinates and how we should deal with it.

Ideally, any buildings you want to keep that are within the red zones will be moved on a free spot of your choice somewhere else on the map. If that proves to be impossible, we'll keep your building and the area surrounding it.

Additionally, if there are areas on the map where you've built isolated from everyone else and are ready to give up, please reply with the coordinates so we can remove it and clear up more space. This can make a big difference, so please take a few minutes and see if you're willing to let something unmarked go!

Note that the current plans call for the map trimming to be done on September 28th. That's in two weeks. As such, if there's something you'd like to have moved/preserved, please contact us before then!

About help and donations, new menu

Posted by Doctacosa on August 26, 2013 at 14:23 [Link]

Something that came up several times in the past few weeks has been how to help the server grow further, or how donations work. I thought I'd take some time to clear this up.

There are a variety of ways that you can help this site and server to grow. Most notably, talk about it! The more players we have, the more active the community is, the more attractive it becomes for new players. I've assembled a list of ways that anyone can easily assist with.

For those who might consider donating money, I've written a more complete explanation on what the money will be used for. In short, there's no pressure to donate whatsoever, as the server won't be going away even if no one does it. However, that can help cover costs and allow further expansions, and is a great way to show your appreciation. I also added a few perks for donators, which are listed on the help page. Most notably, donators will be able to join the server even if it's full and get a special tag in-game and on the forums.

Note that, as of now, all staff members also have the ability to join the server even at capacity. That way, potential help won't get locked behind a closed door!

With the addition of this information, plus previous additions done to the website in the previous months, I've reorganized the navigation menu a bit. All previously linked pages are now available through some dropdown menus, making sure that entire sections don't get forgotten once their related news post is off the front page!

Official server resource pack!

Posted by Doctacosa on August 21, 2013 at 1:51 [Link]

We now have an official Creeper's Lab texture pack!

Designed by our own Sphenicus, this pack aims to improve the default Minecraft experience while personalizing it to better fit the server's community. In order to reach that goal, the standard block and item textures have been kept: the look of the core game is thus preserved... yet several changes have been performed. You can read the full details on the download page. Get it today!

... aaand they are done.

Posted by Doctacosa on August 19, 2013 at 23:45 [Link]

Hot on the trail of the discovery of the elusive achievement #100, and still pumped from the hunt, our players kept on busy working through the latest set of 50. Less than a week after those were added, Anonymous_SoFar topped the leaderboard by finding and scoring them all already! Good job, Anon!

MORE achievements!

Posted by Doctacosa on August 14, 2013 at 2:40 [Link]

The people requested, the admin obliged!

By popular request, 50 new achievements have been added tonight, giving players 150 different goals to reach in-game! I have done some improvements to the achievements system, allowing me to create some more complex targets. You can view the list of known achievements here, while some of the new entries will be hidden until the moment they are discovered.

New achievements preview

As before, the new achievements will be granted once you login to the server. This means that the in-game notifications will be fairly overloaded for a few days! Also, almost all of the "visits"-type goals (marked with the Creeper's Lab logo) only count as of NOW, so you'll have to get moving to earn these!

Who will be the first to top the leaderboard at 150 achievements? :-D

Server upgraded to 1.6.2!

Posted by Doctacosa on August 7, 2013 at 1:36 [Link]

It's time to update, everyone: the server is now running Minecraft 1.6.2! Note that you need to download a new launcher to be able to use the latest game version. You can find the download link near the bottom of this news post. Once the new launcher is installed on your computer, I suggest that you click the "Edit profile" buttton and select "release 1.6.2" as the "Use version" setting. That way, whenever the client gets an automatic update, you won't have to go switch back your settings until the server is compatible.

But what about HORSES!?
To make it easier for you to find horses, I'll be spawning some in the existing plains of the map. This means that you do NOT need to visit unexplored regions of the world to be able to find them! Likewise, each plain will have a chest or two on it. Inside, you'll find various horse armor sets and nametags.

It's probably a good idea to store your horse armor and saddles properly in a locked chest whenever you don'tt use them, as anyone can unequip a horse that you've tamed. Also, a newly bred horse will be wild: anyone can tame the baby once it has grown. Use this to give horses to others!

Achievement #100 GET!

Posted by Doctacosa on August 4, 2013 at 3:05 [Link]

After a few months of teasing, the last missing achievement was found! mormonmoo was the first to piece together the clues given to learn about "Race Master - Craft a stack of carrots on sticks". Both Anonymous_SoFar and WindRider739, who had been fighting for the first place on the leaderboard for a while now, both jumped on the discovery and completed their collection of achievements at the same time. Congratulations!

What now?
Since people keep asking for more, I'm happy to announce that 50 more achievements will be added! I'm aiming to have these available in a bit over a week from now.

List of activities on the server

Posted by Doctacosa on August 3, 2013 at 1:54 [Link]

First things first, I'd like to remind all players, new and old alike, that Saturday nights are Events Nights! Starting at around 9pm (Eastern Time) and lasting a few hours, this special period is designated for players to visit various attractions and participate in group events. To make this easier, a set of teleporters is enabled at various key points on the map. Losses upon death are also negated: anyone who dies won't lose any items or experience, making PvP battles much easier to participate in.

End of Time

To answer a common question, I've compiled a list of games and events that are available on the server. Note that all these are accessible and working at any time, day or night, all week long. They simply are more convenient to visit on Events Nights thanks to the network of teleporters available and the fact that many players want to participate at the same time. If you're wondering what to do at any given time, check the list and pick a destination!

Head on pike

Added last week and successfully tested during last Events Night are head drops. Whenever you kill someone in PvP, they'll drop a head for you to collect. You're then free to hoard these, put them over your own head, or proudly display them on pikes in your trophy room. Additionally, notifications will be published in-game for all to see whenever a player manages to score several kills in a row.

New helper

Posted by Doctacosa on August 2, 2013 at 3:42 [Link]

This is a quick message to let everyone know that SoratheEliteOne has been added to the staff as Helper. He'll be responsible for greeting new players, helping them find their way around, and assist anyone else who might need it.

Congratulations!

Scheduled server maintenance

Posted by Doctacosa on July 21, 2013 at 5:51 [Link]

The server will be down for a few hours this coming Monday (the 22nd) while I perform some maintenance and updates. While this won't result in upgrading to 1.6 yet, it will give me a chance to ensure that everything keeps running smoothly in the future!

While the server is down, you're free to hang around the chatroom and the forums. I'll most likely be there in case you need to ask something!

Reminder: avoid idling for too long near spawners

Posted by Doctacosa on July 9, 2013 at 17:37 [Link]

I'd like to remind our players to avoid waiting for too long around mob spawners, commonly called "XP grinders", where enemies pile up waiting to be killed. If you let too many mobs spawn in a given area, it creates slowdown for everyone and can even crash the server if kept out of control. If I notice someone not paying attention to their grinder for a significant period of time (say, a half-hour) and it's starting to have an effect on other players, I will not hesitate to kick them out.

Thank you for being considerate to your fellow players!

Minecraft 1.6 coming - wait before upgrading!

Posted by Doctacosa on June 30, 2013 at 19:30 [Link]

Minecraft 1.6 is expected to be officially released tomorrow. This new game version will require all players to get a new launcher. However, the server will most likely not be updated for a few weeks as we wait for the next Bukkit update. As such, in order to keep on playing with us, you will have to stick to the current launcher.

Keep an eye on this space for future updates!

Reminder: Saturday nights are Events Nights!

Posted by Doctacosa on June 28, 2013 at 14:18 [Link]

I'd like to remind all players that Saturday nights are Events Nights!

Starting at around 9pm Eastern time and lasting a few hours, this is the time where teleporters are enabled around the server. This allows players to quickly move from one location to another to enjoy the various activities available, and do so without losing their inventories upon death. This is the perfect opportunity for those looking to join in group activities such as PvP battles, or achieve dangerous feats that they wouldn't dare to try otherwise such as the Nether Coaster!

Nether Coaster

If you want to hear more about what events are available, just ask us on the server!

While I have been busy for the past few weeks, leading to a few nights to start late or being outright cancelled, I'm back on track to make sure that everyone can enjoy this at it's fullest!

Fancy houses contest - THE RESULTS!

Posted by Doctacosa on June 18, 2013 at 3:48 [Link]

First things first, thank you everyone who decided to enter our fancy houses contest! With 22 applicants, this event attracted many more players than I expected and is a clear success! Many people took the time to craft original buildings that showed a lot of creative thinking.

Three judges scored all houses from 0 to 10: Dr. Cossack, Sphenicus and WindRider739, based on the criterias outlined in the original announcement.

Without wasting any further time, THE WINNERS:
- First place: Texasmassacre - $20 Amazon.com giftcard
- Second place: Anonymous_SoFar - Diamond Sword with Looting III and Sharpness IV
- Third place: Phrogie - Diamond Pickaxe with Silk Touch I and Efficiency IV

You will all be contacted in-game in order to claim your prize. Congratulations! All entries, with their score and comments from our judges, can be viewed right here. Beware of the image-heavy page!

With the end of this contest, the town of Oak Hills is now available for all general construction work. If you have a house there, feel free to update it as you see fit; likewise, if you want to move there, you're welcomed to!

With the success of this, we're already looking at planning more contests in the future. As usual, keep an eye on this space for more information!

Server glitch in Port Townshend

Posted by Doctacosa on June 18, 2013 at 3:41 [Link]

A glitch unfortunately hit the area of Port Townshend tonight, and I was forced to restore the area based on a backup from two weeks ago.

If you lost supplies because of this, please contact me or one of the server ops and we will compensate you. I'm sorry that this happened!

Contest update - 72 hours left!

Posted by Doctacosa on June 13, 2013 at 3:59 [Link]

I'd like to remind all participants of our fancy house building contest that, from the time of this post, you have 72 hours left to complete your build! With 20 people picking a lot in Oak Hills, the judging period should prove interesting. I suggest to everyone who started construction to wrap things up before the end of Saturday!

House building contest!

Posted by Doctacosa on June 1, 2013 at 3:31 [Link]

It's time for a new building contest! The theme is fancy houses!

I've developed a new building ground near Central for this, called Oak Hills. To find it, go to Central then take the overland train line toward Victoria. Continue past the desert settlement. You'll arrive at a fork, where you need to take the line identified as "Oak Hills". The next stop is your destination!

Map

Each contestant can use a single 20x20 lot as building ground. There are currently 9 available locations, marked with fences, and more will be added if several players are interested in participating.

Oak Hills preview 1

Rules

- The theme is fancy houses. They can be built out of anything you want, as long as the result would be a good fit for a nice neighborhood.
- Each player can claim a single 20x20 lot to build.
- The houses can't step over or beyond the fences in any way.
- Basements are allowed, but again, they can't stretch beyond the lot's limits.
- The wooden fences can be replaced with something else, although you'd better ask your neighbors first!
- Outside AND inside counts! Make it interesting and realistic!
- As with anything else on the server, this is survival only. You need to gather your materials first, then get building!
- You have two weeks from now to get your building done. The contest will close on June 15th at 23:59.

Prizes

Since what is a good contest without prizes? :-) The following will be offered:

- First place: $20 Amazon.com (or .ca) giftcard, offered by Dr. Cossack
- Second place: in-game, refurbished Diamond Sword with Looting III and Sharpness IV, offered by WindRider739
- Third place: in-game, brand new Diamond Pickaxe with Silk Touch I and Efficiency IV, offered by MaximumRose

The houses will be judged on how well they stick to the theme and the creativity used in designing them. Realism is key: create lifelike indoor layouts to score the most points! Three players from the server will evaluate each house to determine the winners.

New player? You need to register to play on the Creeper's Lab, but it's automatic and you'll be playing within minutes! Get started, we'd like to have you with us!

Good luck!

Reminder: Saturday nights are Events Nights!

Posted by Doctacosa on May 25, 2013 at 5:19 [Link]

I'd like to take a minute to remind old and new players alike that Saturday nights are Events Nights!

This completely optional event, which starts at around 9pm Eastern time every Saturday, is the perfect opportunity for our players to do something besides mining and crafting. PvP, pig racing, parkour, mazes and more are on the menu!

Two new locations have been added recently to the rotation: Chicking by iKatze and Isle of Carnage by WindRider739. Chicking, playable by up to four players at the same time, involves using fishing rods to catch falling chicken. The first person to get five wins! Isle of Carnage is a large area (400x200 blocks) dedicated to PvP battles. It's sheer size makes it especially suitable for large groups of players, potentially regrouped in two factions: red and blue.

Want to have some fun? Something different than the usual Minecraft gameplay? Then join us on Events Nights!

UPDATE: Something came up and I might be showing up late tonight. I'll do my best to be there to start this up, but it might be delayed. Sorry about that!

New staff nominations!

Posted by Doctacosa on May 10, 2013 at 2:27 [Link]

First things first, thank you everyone who applied for a position. We had a great turnaround, and it's always good to see that people from the community want to get involved on a deeper level!

Several names were received, many were considered, but we could only accept a few! As such, please welcome iKatze as server op, and AleXxXfry and mormonmoo as helpers! Congratulations! All three of you will be getting shortly a private message on the forums with more detailed information.

For those who do not know, Kusorai recently stepped down on his own accord from his Op status. He will remain around as Helper to assist the player base.

As an aside, Krodane, AshaLina and itsthesherf have all inherited the new Media status, as they handle our YouTube, Tumblr/Facebook and Twitter accounts respectively! This new status doesn't come with any special abilities, but will allow players to have a clue to the special role they're playing around here.

Server upgraded to 1.5.2!

Posted by Doctacosa on May 6, 2013 at 1:55 [Link]

Hot on the heels of last week's 1.5.2 update, the server is now running the latest version of Minecraft with some bug fixes. Please update and keep on playing!

Minecraft 1.5.2 coming - wait before upgrading!

Posted by Doctacosa on May 1, 2013 at 15:26 [Link]

Minecraft 1.5.2 is expected to be released soon to fix some bugs. Unfortunately, 1.5.1 servers and 1.5.2 clients are NOT compatible. This means that, in order to keep on playing with us, you must wait before upgrading!

The jump to the new version should happen faster than the 1.5 update as fewer changes have been done to the game. Please be patient until then!

Help wanted!

Posted by Doctacosa on April 29, 2013 at 23:50 [Link]

The server's community is growing and growing, and with some of the usually reliable members busy with their personal lives, I'm looking to add a few people to the staff of the server. Ideally, I'd like to get one new Helper and one new Server Op, and that might be you!

The tasks of a helper include the following:

  • Greeting the new players and answering any questions they might have
  • Checking on those players to make sure they understand and follow the rules
  • Getting players unstuck due to server bugs (it happens!)
  • As a last resort, kicking and/or banning troublesome players

Being an op involves the above plus the following:

  • Fix broken permissions
  • Protect the player's creations as requested
  • Investigate ongoing issues
  • Promote players to the trusted status

Quite obviously, only registered and active players will be considered. If you're interested and want to apply to a position (or both!), please send me (Dr. Cossack) a private message through the forums.

Thank you for considering this!

Reminder: Saturday nights are Events Nights!

Posted by Doctacosa on April 27, 2013 at 17:40 [Link]

I'd like to remind all players that Saturday nights are Events Nights!

From approximately 9pm to midnight, Eastern time, you're welcome to join us for various multiplayer activities such as PvP, pig racing, spleef and more! Many single-player attractions are also available, including roller coasters, a parkour arena and mazes.

To give you a chance to reach those special locations quickly, you'll find some TARDIS and time gates spread around the world. Those serve as teleportation points and bring you to a central hub. From there, you can reach another destination quickly, but they are only enabled during Events Nights. Be on the lookout for these!

Server upgraded to 1.5!

Posted by Doctacosa on April 11, 2013 at 0:47 [Link]

I'm happy to announce that we're now running Minecraft v1.5! Update your client, then join us to discover the new features!

To all quartz hunters: I've run a special world modification program that added quartz ore to the current Nether. This means that you do not need to go to unexplored areas to find quartz!

Super Mario Bros. pixel art contest!

Posted by Doctacosa on April 10, 2013 at 13:51 [Link]

Hankapotamus, a player on the server, has decided to take the initiative to launch a pixel art contest with an actual prize! In his own words:

"Come show off your pixel art skills! On the map go to the right of central and look for the mario bros mushroom inside a rectangle, thats Hanks house. The contest will take place in this area and the particiapnts will get prizes!!! Yay! The winner (based on creativity and presentation) will receive a awesome prize if we get enough participants. If we get 5 or more people Im going to give the winner the cost of MC in US dollars...which was 26 bucks for me so it's not bad for a little effort! Characters can be any from the series good or bad but must be labeled with a sign with your name on it. Can be on the ground, standing, or in mid air...wherever you feel necessary in either the desert or woods on either side of my house. There are signs outside my door with basic rules and stuff...if you have any questions just ask when Im online in the next few days. Contest ends 4/17 at noon so get building and spread the word! Thanks a lot guys!"

For those looking for more specific directions, start from Grand Central Station. Take the train line toward Victoria, and continue past the town. At the rail junction that follows, take the line to your left (heading North). Hankapotamus' location is after the mountain pass! Good luck to those who decide to enter!

Super important poll

Posted by Doctacosa on April 8, 2013 at 1:49 [Link]

I have a very important poll to submit to all players on the server. Something that will influence how things go from now on. One that will change the face of the world forever.

Survey: DC or Marvel?

MaximumRose thanks you in advance for taking the time to answer!

April's Fools Day recap

Posted by Doctacosa on April 3, 2013 at 17:31 [Link]

If you haven't heard yet, what happened on the 1st of April was nothing more than an April's Fools Day gag. :) All the destruction and weirdness you might have seen on that day is gone, and we're back on track!

Events Night - week 3!

Posted by Doctacosa on March 30, 2013 at 2:39 [Link]

As before, this Saturday night is Events Night! You're welcomed to join us for several single and multiplayer activities, including some new attractions! Various teleporters will be enabled to allow you to quickly move from one region to another. We're looking forward to see you there, starting at around 9pm Eastern time*!

* No lateness expected this time!

Events Night!

Posted by Doctacosa on March 16, 2013 at 3:08 [Link]

As announced previously, we're starting a weekly Events Night happening on the Creeper's Lab!

Why have a special time for that? There are two main reasons:
1- It can be difficult to find many players willing to engage in a competition at the same time.
2- As we're spread out all over the world, travel time is an issue for many.

Only during Events Nights, various portals (represented by TARDIS and time gates above) will be enabled, allowing people to quickly get from one location to the other! Pig racing, PvP, spleef, jousting and more are all on the menu for groups, while several single player events like the Garden Maze are also waiting for you to discover them!

The first of such nights is scheduled for tomorrow (Saturday), starting at around 9pm (Eastern time). It will last for about 3 hours, which might change depending of the players' level of interest.

See you there!

Minecraft 1.5 coming - wait before upgrading!

Posted by Doctacosa on March 12, 2013 at 0:47 [Link]

If all goes as planned, Minecraft 1.5 will be available from the launcher on Wednesday. However, wait before upgrading if you want to keep playing with us! The server software will take several days, if not a few weeks to be updated, and 1.5 clients won't be able to connect until that happens. Keep an eye on this space for future updates!

Survey results

Posted by Doctacosa on March 10, 2013 at 19:04 [Link]

First of all, thanks to everyone who took the time to answer the quick survey.

By popular vote, the events nights will take place on Saturday evenings (Eastern time). The specific time of each event, which might vary a bit depending of the availability of the staff, will be posted each week about a day beforehand.

I'm looking forward to see you there to play and compete with others!

Survey: events night

Posted by Doctacosa on March 2, 2013 at 17:02 [Link]

We've got several locations on the server that work better when multiple players are involved, such as PvP arenas and pig racing. Likewise, some attractions like the Garden Maze are far away from the players who'd like to try them.

To make a better use of these locations, and have succesful large scale happenings, we'd like to schedule a weekly events time period. For it's duration, special teleports would be enabled, allowing players to quickly reach a given destination and participate in whatever is going on.

To help find when most players would be available, please answer this survey in the coming days. Once we get enough replies, the best time period will be selected to have some fun!

Meet your new helpers!

Posted by Doctacosa on February 24, 2013 at 3:15 [Link]

First of all, I'd like to thank everyone who applied for a position as server helper. It's good to know that you care about the server and it's community!

Please welcome to the staff daylightnightmar, MaximumRose and Phrogie who have been selected to assist the player base with everything they need. Congratulations! I've sent you three a private message on the forums with detailed information.

Depending of the activity level on the server and the available free time of the current team, I might promote more people to this position without launching official requests as I did here. You think you might be interested in the future? Do you best to help others, and you might get picked!

More achievements available!

Posted by Doctacosa on February 21, 2013 at 2:11 [Link]

As announced last week, an extra set of 50 achievements has been added today, for a grand total of a HUNDRED rewards waiting to be claimed!

This latest batch focuses less on the silly ("Creeper Wannabe - Blow yourself up twice") and more on high-value targets ("First Blood - Kill another player in PvP") and server specific features ("Sunset Ride - Ride the Transoceanic Line").

Just as before, there are three types of achievements: those that are known to all, those that become visible as you start working on them, and those declared only once they have been earned. Keep an eye on the list to see those already known, and try discovering what the others are!

Achievements preview

Note that all the achievements marked with the Creeper's Lab logo, which involve visiting various locations, only count as of NOW. This means that, even if you already found the underground Super Mario level in the past, you won't earn Underground Jumpman until you visit it again.

If you're already active on the server, it's possible that you've already earned some of the other, new achievements. They'll be awarded to you the next time you login. This will probably cause an influx of notifications in the server chat in the first few days, then it will all go back to normal.

Who will top the leaderboard this time?

Help wanted!

Posted by Doctacosa on February 14, 2013 at 0:30 [Link]

As the server's population grows, so do the needs of the players! In order to stay on top of things, we're looking for a few helpers to join the server staff.

To do so, a new Helper rank will be created. People taking those positions won't be server ops: instead, I like to think of them as community managers, mostly responsible with the well-being of the player base. Their duties will include:

  • Greeting the new players and answering any questions they might have.
  • Checking on new players to make sure they understand and follow the rules.
  • Getting players unstuck due to server bugs (it happens!)
  • As a last resort, kicking and/or banning troublesome players

On their end, ops will still be responsible for the above, as well as fixing server bugs, correct broken permissions, investigate ongoing issues, promote players to the trusted rank, and so on.

Interested? Please send me a private message on the forums! I'll be making a choice among the applicants in about 10 days (the February 23-24 weekend). Note that only established and active players will be considered for a promotion.

Thanks to those who will consider this!

Achiever achieves achievements

Posted by Doctacosa on February 13, 2013 at 0:34 [Link]

Congratulations to WindRider739, who confirmed yesterday his top position on the leaderboard by claiming all 50 achievements! It took almost 6 months for someone to clear all goals, and with 4 people having over 40 of them, competition was tough!

Level up!!
To keep the challenge alive and to ensure that no one gets bored, a new set of 50 goals will be added in about a week. This means that there will be a HUNDRED ACHIEVEMENTS waiting to be claimed! If you want to get a headstart, try to earn right now as many of the existing ones as possible!

Now on Facebook and Twitter!

Posted by Doctacosa on January 23, 2013 at 3:22 [Link]

We are now on Facebook and Twitter! Be sure to follow us on both for updates, screenshots and more about the server and it's community! itsthesherf is the one handling both accounts, be sure to send in some messages to keep her busy! ;-)

As a reminder, we're also active on Tumblr and YouTube! You might also want to drop by the forums to exchange with us on Minecraft and other topics!

Minecraft 1.4.7 upcoming - update away!

Posted by Doctacosa on January 8, 2013 at 19:21 [Link]

Right on schedule, Minecraft will be updated to 1.4.7 tomorrow. Feel free to update as soon as the launcher offers it: this is compatible with the current version of the server, and said server already includes the bug fixes of this latest release.
